Abstract

This project explores the impact of farmed animal sanctuaries and their different kinds of outreach efforts – such as tours, private visits, public events, and student programs – on visitor experiences of compassion and kindness. By focusing on three farmed animal sanctuaries local to the Los Angeles area – Farm Sanctuary in Acton, Love Always Sanctuary in Sun Valley, and the Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita – a team consisting of faculty and student researchers will study the effect sanctuary events have on the self-reported sense of compassion among participants toward non-humans and humans alike through interactions with farmed animals and with sanctuary work, as it extends outward toward interactions with both non-humans and humans in broader life experiences. Our goal is to work with community partners to develop research questions of common interest and to identify research methods that meet organizations’ needs and goals while also identifying potential limitations in their programmatic approaches and their impact.
